My name is Michelle DeWitt. I’m the mother of two kids. My oldest, Easton, is a 8 year old boy who has considered all dirt bike riders his role model, next to his Dad, since he was 2 years old. He has a developed a love for racing and hopes one day to complete freestyle. Easton has only one other passion that comes close to his love for dirt bikes, the battle against Mitochondrial Disease. His baby sister, Payton, who is now 4 years old, was diagnosed at 18 months with this horrendous disease. I will not overwhelm you with the details since I have attached multiple documents explaining the disease and several other things. However, I will say that Mitochondrial Disease affects people from head to toe. Essentially Mitochondrial Disease is a deficiency in the body’s ability to form energy leaving all other organs and life supporting functions to suffer. It preys on adults with later onset, but it also preys on innocent children forcing their lives to be hindered by this monster. Symptoms range in severity from mild to fatal. There is no treatment, no cure and minimal research is being completed due to lack of funding.

On September 12, 2009 our family will be hosting, with several friends and perfect strangers, a charity race, Payton’s Race for a Cure. We have taken the two passions in our lives, and hoped to combine them for the better of the cause and ultimately a cure. We have collaborated with United Mitochondrial Disease Foundation (UMDF.org) and have elected to have all of the proceeds go directly to them. Not only will we be hosting a charity dirt bike race that day, but we will also be hosting several family orientated activities, a multi band concert and a raffle filled with donated items from local businesses and individuals. We are also reaching out to local Moto-Sport dealerships for sponsors and are in the works of offering them the opportunity to set up a booth or tent to display their merchandise.

With this letter to you I hope to accomplish a few things. The first is a stretch. I understand your time is so very valuable and I also understand that your schedule is incredibly demanding. However, I would like to extend to your company the invitation to attend our event. Your popularity among the community of riders is amazing. If you are interested in setting up a booth we would love to speak to you further about this. Second, if you do attend or do not attend I’m hoping that you would consider donating items to our charity race. We would like to reward the riders with prizes geared towards their passion. We would also like to thank them with these prizes for donating their time to fight for the cause. My third request is simply asking for your support. I would like for you to explore the option of teaming up with UMDF to help promote their cause. My husband, son and several friends and family all proudly display green awareness ribbons on their quads and bikes to help promote awareness. We hope that you will consider offering your name and reputation in support for UMDF. At this point, UMDF is doing everything they can within their power to research for a cure to Mitochondrial Disease. They have also received support from Jack Black.
